5 GPS for Black Mamba APU

Anti-poaching is a major problem in the area where the Black Mambas operate and they are constantly plagued by rhino and bush-meat poachers. In addition to antelopes, other endangered species such as wild dogs and cheetahs are also sadly the victims of snaring. This project is to raise funds to purchase 5 GPS devices for the Black Mambas Anti-Poaching Unit in South Africa.

At the time of this project's creation, the Black Mambas current needs include:

GPS devices (5)
VHF Cables (6)
VHF Receiver (3)
VHF Antenna (3)
HandHeld Radio (3)
Base Radio (2)
Handcuffs & Pouch (10)
Cutlery (12)
Billie & Dixie (6)
Pepper Spray (11)
Pepper Spray Pouch (20)
Metal Mugs (8)
Webbing Belts (11)

While we are fund-raising for the GPS devices in particular, the funds raised will go into the general fund to allow for the purchase of any of the above resources required, at the time that funding is received. Help us get the Black Mambas the full resources they deserve. Funds will be delivered to the Black Mambas' U.S. 501c3 partner Rhino Mercy for distribution to Transfrontier Africa, the Black Mambas parent organization.

The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit is the first of its kind, given that the majority of the teams are women. There are currently 26 Black Mambas deployed and a further 23 armed guards that operate within Balule and along its boundaries.

Funds:

705.00$

Species:

Rhinos

Country:

South Africa

Project picture description:

Help raise money to purchase 5 GPS devices for the Black Mambas all-women Anti-Poaching Unit...

Project Lead:

Amy Clark

Lead picture:

The Thin Green Line Foundation

This project is to raise funds for The Thin Green Line Foundation to support the widow and family of a fallen ranger (Fallen Ranger Fund A1). $1000 will cover the annual salary of a ranger in many areas of the world under the most pressure from poaching, such as Uganda, Kenya and Cambodia.

The Thin Green Line Foundation Protects Nature’s Protectors by providing vital support to park rangers and their communities who are the front-line of conservation. We work predominantly in developing nations and conflict zones, and with Indigenous park rangers within Australia and abroad. We provide rangers on the front-line of conservation with essential anti-poaching equipment and training, and financial support to the widows and orphans of park rangers killed in the line of duty.

Through our work we aim to ensure that:

Park rangers are valued for their vital role at the front line of conservation
Park rangers when in contact situations with poachers have the ability to defend themselves
Park rangers are provided with decent working conditions and a living wage
Park rangers are provided with the skills and tools they need
Park rangers families and communities have on-going support when rangers are injured or killed in the line of duty

At WikiPop we strive for transparency and detail in where your donations are going to work - in many cases, down to the individual recipient as in the case of the Lion Guardians. The Thin Green Line Foundation supports rangers and their families who have additional privacy and security concerns so it is not possible to share the specific ranger in each case, however the following testimonial is representative of the situation faced by the families who will be the recipient of your donation. They need and deserve our utmost support for putting their lives and their families security on the line to protect the world's wildlife.

BACKGROUND

The Thin Green Line Foundation was founded by award-winning conservationist, documentary filmmaker and Park Ranger, Sean Willmore.

In 2004, Sean set off around the world to make a documentary about the stories of park rangers. Taking almost 12 months to travel through 23 countries, he uncovered many inspiring stories along the way.

The Thin Green Line documentary premiered in 2007, capturing people’s hearts in over 50 countries. The film has since become an international success story, offering a sense of hope and pride for park rangers around the world.

The documentary became the catalyst for Sean to set up The Thin Green Line Foundation, to support park rangers in danger.

RECOGNITION

Sean Willmore and the Thin Green Line Foundation have been recognized globally for their conservation efforts, including:

Pride of Australia medal (2013)
Melbourne Award for Contribution to Sustainability (2013)
United Nations Association of Australia Environment Award (2009)

Project picture:

Partner:

The Thin Green Line Foundation

Partner url:

The Thin Green Line Foundation

Partner description:

Every day, park rangers risk their lives to protect wildlife and habitats from poaching and other threats. Sadly, it’s estimated that over 1,000 park rangers have been killed in the line of duty over the past 10 years, 80% by commercial poachers and armed militia groups. Park rangers are generally under-equipped, underpaid, and often under-appreciated. We think they are heroes and work to provide them with the support they need to continue to protect threatened species around the world.

Funds:

1 000.00$

Species:

Rhinos

Country:

Australia

Project picture description:

“In the past 10 years alone it is estimated that over 1000 Park Rangers have been killed; 75% of them by commercial poachers and armed militia groups. This is largely the untold story of poaching.” - Sean Willmore

Project Lead:

Sean Willmore

Lead picture:
